Welcome to the class

Dear friends,
I welcome you to the very first lesson of our “Learn Mouth Organ Online!!!!” community.

This small, inexpensive and very melodious musical instrument Mouth Organ (Harmonica) can be used to play anything from nursery rhymes to classical music. You can use it to play simple songs or complex songs, old songs or modern songs.

I’ll not make the learning of this instrument very complex or will not tell u “Arey yaar isko sikhna to bahut mushkil hai (Its very difficult to learn this instrument)” like what most of our friends who know a bit playing scare the basic learners.

Believe me; you don’t need years of music lessons to begin to enjoy your Mouth Organ (MO). With a couple of lessons and a few minutes of practice each day, you should be playing simple tunes in no time. And if you continue to learn and practice new songs, you can become an expert player, very soon.

I have divided this Blog in some chapters. U may encounter some new words during my write up so I have made a section Introduction to new Terms at the end where u can find their meaning.

Details of the MO system or its (in Biological language) Physiology:

(I’m using TOWER brand for explaination so please refer it accordingly)

The MO is having 24 windows as shown in the figure. I have tried to make the picture self explanatory. This MO is having 3 octaves (1-8; 9-16 and 17-24). U can see that there is a repetation of the same notes starting with ‘C’. In simple words, u can play a song at three different places with the same pitch/scale.

I think I should not explain so many things in one post bcoz it may eat ur BHEJA and can make u to just close this file or through the mouth organ on bed and do some other work so I control myself and rest we’ll talk in next week.

How to hold the Mouth Organ?

Actually there are very techniques to hold the MO properly for different effects like the one ‘Tremollo’. But we’ll discuss it later.
In simple words, at this level u don’t need to follow any specific style of holding. Just hold it(of course the windows of the MO should be towards ur mouth…..hahaha).
One more thing, actually in musical instruments the lower sound is always at ur left side (ex. Harmonium) so u can follow the direction as shown in the picture. It means the scale changer knob shud come at ur right side but guys like my dimag I hold the MO in reverse side, means the knob is always at my left hand side (u can see this in my video posted on YouTube).

Song of this Week (Home Work….hahaha):

The first song we are going to learn is,
Hai Apna Dil To Awara, Na Jaane Kis Pe Aayega.

Today I’ll give the notes of only first line of that song. B4 starting first hum the song and try to analyse where the sound is long and where is short.
This line is played between the windows 5 to 11 (Refer the picture).

Hai....Ap-----na.... Dil..... To...... Aa----wa~~~ ra,
G......CC----- D.......E-...... C......... D”----C~~B~A

Na......Ja-ne ~~~ Kis..... Pe...... Aa-ye-ga !
A-....... G--A ~B~ CC........ D........ E--D--C

Blow (Blow the notes shown in red color)
Draw (Draw the notes shown in blue color)

U should practice this line until next week. Feel free to write in the community if u feel any difficulty.

All da best !!!

Introduction to New Terms:

I'll post all da words in a special blogs.

Brief History and Types of Mouth Organ

Brief History :

The mouth organ was invented in 1821 by the German clock maker, Christian Friedrich Ludwig Buschmann, and quickly became popular among the masses due to its simplicity (easy to learn to play), conveniently small size, inexpensive cost and pleasing sound. Within a short time other builders began manufacturing the instrument. In 1825 Fr. Hotz began producing mouth organs in his factory in Knittlingen, Germany. Another German, Christian Messner, acquired some of Christian Buschmann's auras. He set up shop in his clock making firm in Trossingen in 1827 and began manufacturing instruments that were similar to Buschmann's 'aura.' Messner called these instruments mundaeolines.

During the year 1829, J. W. Glier began manufacturing mouth organs at his factory in Klingenthal, Germany. In 1855 the German, Christian Weiss, started producing mouth organs. Finally in 1857 a firm in Trossingen Germany began mass producing harmonicas (MO) for the public. At the head of this company was the famous Matthias Hohner. Today the manufacture of harmonicas in Europe is in the sole domain of the Hohner harmonica factory at Trossingen.

When Hohner first began producing harmonicas, in 1857 his factory produced a mere 650 harmonicas. In 1879 he increased his production to over 700,000 harmonicas. At the turn of the century, the company was producing five million harmonicas annually. Since that time, the Hohner company has expanded their production to over fifty diatonic and chromatic harmonica models.

After that China became the biggest competetor of German brands in production of MO.

Types of Mouth Organ

There are many types of mouth organs. But the most important ones which we need to know about are Diatonic Mouth Organ and Chromatic Mouth Organ. But as I told u at very first that I don't want to make it too deep and complex, I explain the difference between these two in the layman language.

Diatonic Mouth Organ

Diatonic MO doesn't have a scale changer, a round button present at the side which is used to slide a bar in MO which changes the scale. For example : Common brands found in India are 'Hero' and some other chinese companies which we generally get in India having price ~ Rs.175 - 200. Depends upon ur bargaining capacity and the the idiocy of the shop keeper...hahaha.

Hohner is a German brand which produces all types of MO.

Chromatic Mouth Organ

Chromatic Mouth Organ has a scale changer. Bcoz of this facillity we can play Sharp and Flat Notes; Komal Swar - Indian Classical Musical Term (see Introduction to New Terms for more details). Hence on this type of MO, u can play all types of songs.
In India the most popular (and cheap hence favourite of the general MO players...hahaha) brand is 'Tower'. Tower is a good brand for the begginers and also for many professionals. But one more brand, Hohner, (although a bit expensive) is one the best brands for Chromatic MO.

However, for all the begginers I recommend Tower brand as I'll be giving explainations using this brand. And when u'll feel a bit perfection in MO playing u can start using Hohner or some better brands.

There are also some other types of Mouth Organ but explaining those would be a bit complex and I think its not very important for us at this level.
If anybody wants some detailed explaination these two and other types of MO, please create a separate forum for that where we'll discuss the extra information.

Some strategies for our community

Dear all,
as per our plan, I started this Blog especially for our group to discuss the Mouth Organ (MO).

I’m sorry for the delayed postings. Actually neither u nor me are full time MO players and suffer from the scarcity of time due to our daily jobs. (However, MO is our hobby more precious than mine as well as many of ur lives…hahahah…) So after taking care of some practical things I have made some plans for our postings and replies.

In both India and Japan we have a common holiday, SUNDAY the great. And in Japan I have two holidays i.e. Saturday and Sunday so we can discuss all our points on SUNDAY, however you can post ur problems, replies and comments on any day of week according to ur availability of time. I can assure u my replies and one new topic on Sunday of every week.

Recently I have recorded a song (Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dilko) on mouth organ (TOWER - chromatic Harmonica) using a karaoke file and recording software and mixed them using some other program. In this song I tried to play as simple as possible without any effect especially for the begginers so that they can easily understand the notes. The pitch (Scale) of the karaoke and my Mouth Organ is a bit different but this is the easiest scale to play on the Tower MO. I'll go on using more and more effects as per ur progress. After BELLING MANY PAPADS, finally I got this product which I've uploaded on Net. This song is also a trial just to see whether it works in future for posting some other informational audios or not. I hope u like it.

Check out the following link.

Guys, believe me since the day I created this community I’m downloading, uploading, deleting and learning many programs/software and planning how it can be used to teach mouth organ…sometimes I feel it really funny and thanks to u all, I’m gaining some more knowledge…hahaha...

Please expect my next blog on next sunday which would be useful for basics and directly linked to learning MO.
See u..........
